How this calculator works

A pipe's cross-section is an annulus (ring) — outside diameter minus a hollow bore. Weight per unit length is the annular area multiplied by density:

ID = OD − 2t W = (π/4) · (OD² − ID²) · ρ

OD is outside diameter, t is wall thickness, ID is the resulting inside diameter, and ρ is material density. Multiply the per-meter weight by total pipe length for the total weight.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for tube as well as pipe?

Yes — the annular cross-section formula is identical for round tube; just use the tube's actual OD and wall thickness.

What if I only know the inside diameter?

Enter OD as ID + 2t instead — rearrange to whichever two of OD, ID, and t you know, then compute the third before using this calculator.
